Key Highlights & Architecture

  • The Pagoda StructureOriginally built with five storeys made of rammed earth and exterior brick, it was renovated and expanded over time to its current seven-storey, square brick structure, standing approximately 64.5 meters (211 feet) tall.Built without cement, its interlocking brickwork reflects master-level ancient Chinese architecture.
  • Xuanzang’s Legacy & Buddhist SutrasThe pagoda was specifically erected to preserve the Buddhist sutras, relics, and statues that Xuanzang brought back from India. He worked here for many years translating these sacred texts from Sanskrit into Chinese.
  • Da Ci'en Temple The royal Buddhist temple surrounding the pagoda was built by Prince Li Zhi (later Emperor Gaozong) in memory of his mother, Empress Zhangsun. Today, it remains an active place of worship and reflection.
  • North Plaza Musical Fountain Show The northern square of the pagoda features one of the largest musical fountain performance plazas in Asia. In the evening, dynamic water jets, light shows, and music create a mesmerizing spectacle against the backdrop of the illuminated ancient pagoda.
  • Grand Tang Mall Located just south of the pagoda, this pedestrian street comes alive at night with Tang-style architecture, glowing lanterns, street performances, interactive NPCs, and delicious Shaanxi street food.
